ncc74656 Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 i reconed my SP4 tonight and everything was lined up, i used 8 1.5" wide manila folder slits as spacers in 4 1/4 locations around the coil, they were doubled up. i laid the glue and sprayed the accelerator on the basket before laying the glue. i used 12 alligator clamps to hold the spider down while it set and i also moved the surround into its track up top. then i laid down a bead of glue with accelerator from one bolt hold ot the next and clamped down the surround one section at a time. after 2 hours i pulled the spacers out and pushed the coil up and down. I hear a scraping noise when the sub is 1/3 Xmax out and 2/3 xmax in. it sounds almost like a brush ever so slighly catching the edge of a metal table. now did i do anything wrong in my recone process? secondly i think its a very slight rub and over time i am sure this will rub down on the coil. if its a slight enough rub is there a chance that the noise will go away with causing major damage to the sub? i am assuming that during the 40 seconds it took me to get the clamps on that the accelerator hardened the ca glue and caused a high spot on the spider. this caused the sub to sit at an angle. i laid a bead of glue and let the spider spread it out. nothing, gutted
Nikitaaa Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 It might unwind the coil. Or it might grind it down ever so slightly to the point were it won't make the noise any more. 2007 M/T Honda Civic Coupe EX (4) Sundown Audio X-8's (2) Ampere Audio 3800.1's (3) Stinger SPV-44 Batteries (1) Mechman 240 3:1 Ratio 4th order sealed from the trunkTEAM NWSPLBest termlab scores to date in Honda trunk:151.7db legal (official) IASCA trunk 3 classBest termlab scores to date in my walled Subie:152.9db legal (unofficial) IASCA advanced 2 class155db outlaw
ncc74656 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 for the next time i recone a sub how can i make sure this does not happen? i feel like i did everything by the book. or at least by the book that i read. nothing, gutted
audiofanaticz Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 manilla folders are one of the worst things to use for reconing.. companies reconend them tho because they are easy to come by, and cheap. I use Xray film because its thinner, and last longer. Other good things to use are overhead transparency film. Thing is to go completely around the coil so there is no space left except for a tiny gap where the ends of each shim are. Never overlap your shims on top of themselves, and offset the ends of your shims. Your goal is to shim the coil tight enough to the point where if you raise your recone up a little bit on the shims it dont fall down under its own weight. Your going to want to test this prior to adding glue. You never apply the accelerator until you have the spider landing glued on the basket, and the actual spiders resting in the glue. The purpose of the accelerator is to harden the visible glue to give it a decent hold until the glue has time for a full cure (normally 24hours). Personally I dont remove the lower clamps on the spiders until about 20-30minutes after I get the surround landing glued, seated, sprayed with accelerator.
ncc74656 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 ok, the videos i had watched had the accelerator sprayed prior to putting glue down. next time i will use some thin plastic then. when i inserted these spacers they were tight enough to hold the cone up. nothing, gutted
fox_racin4 Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 When i recone, i use enough shim that i can bearly move the recone down. 1998 gmc extd cab 12 crossfire C710s 4 SAZ-4500s 3 Singer 400A altsbuncha mids/highs Team Asshole
ncc74656 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 yea, thats how mine was. there was also no way to fit more shimm into the gap. i could have used wider pieces and perhaps hte more narrow peices allowed some movement while glueing? nothing, gutted
tacomaguy1 Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Maybe your just not pushing down straight? I use regular white printer paper, all one piece like the other Guy said except for the small gap at the end so they don't overlap Team Flex Issues
ncc74656 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 i just did a 200W test on my home reciever to the sub. it at 20hz i could hear a small amount of nicking (i think) and above that i did not hear any additional noise over the bass sweep. 1-100hz. i will be hooking it up in the truck soon here so ill find out how it performs on full power in a bit. nothing, gutted
mothra Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Spraying accelerator on the basket first is mostly the issue unless you bead of glue was perfectly level. Once glue and accelerator make contact the glue hardens. Why would you do that? It's not like resin where it takes time to cure when hardener is added. It hardens near instantly. if nothing changes, nothing changes You don't know what you don't know, till you don't know
