Well I'm sure its been mentioned before but my installer, who I've been using for over 10yrs and knows his shit, pretty much refused to do a big 3 on my jeep. 2012 wrangler with stock headunit and electrical, stock supposed 700w premium system and my 800w Audio Technix 800.1. The lights dim pretty bad on bass hits....bad enough I don't crank it at night because people think I'm flashing my lights at them. No wiring issues....nothing blown...everything tripple checked. But he thinks the big 3 0ga wire will cause more problems then help. I told him how I have talked to John Price and several others in the industry and of course he says ..."yeah guys running 20k watts". So I've been saving up for a better alt...400 hucks and a better battery setup..400-500 bucks since I do plan on upgrading to at least double what I have now. Idk I trust me my man but at the same time I want more....MORE...MOOOOORE! Sorry bout that last bit its a slow night in the strip club lol.

buying a better alt without doing the big 3 is like putting a damn on a river you're restricting the current flow and can possible overload the wire and cause a fire

you're installer doesn't know his shit

may be a great installer just is ignorant in this aspect of audio, i know a lot of sq installers that may say the same thing

My .02 and maybe a few extra:

Stock Wrangler alts SUCK. I think you either get a 90 or 120 amp unit depending on model, some variance between years

You don't mention what battery you run now, is it stock?

While the big 3 is obviously your better move, especially if there's any upgrading in mind, I think you might settle things now with a better battery and alt alone.

How big are your cable runs now?

Oh last, that's a lot for a custom alt - if all you're running is that 800.1

"Pretty much refused" leaves a lot of room for interpretation. What actually happened.

If "he knows his shit" then he would have advised you to do the big 3 10 years ago when you started using him.

Doing the big 3 may not even stop your headlights from dimming. It will not make a 120A alt produce 170A of output, but it will relieve some strain on your electrical. Just because an installer can hook up amps and speakers, build an enclosure or whatever, doesn't mean he knows what he is doing.

First, what is an "SQ installer"? Are you saying said "SQ installers" would advise against the big 3 upgrade also? If they are good they wouldn't.

there are installers and builders for the spl side then there are other installers for the sq side then there is ppl in the middle, most sq installers are fantastic at what they do but may not know the bbenefits of doing an electrical upgrade like this making them ignorant as i stated, just because an installer is ignorant in one aspect doesnt make him a hack of an installer
