Anyone with cap bank install?

Recommended Posts

They were used in a hybrid bus and are untested. So no guarantee they work properly.

I did a write up here on super caps and a little testing. No balancing circuits used though

I have an ~850 farad cap bank. You know how with voltage drop it's kind of all or nothing? Either you are holding 14v+ (or whatever your alt charges at) or you drop to 13v or lower.

Capacitors store energy. Not in the same way batteries do though. Batteries create energy though a chemical reaction - of which only takes place below the batteries "resting voltage". Capacitors store a difference in electrons - think like static electricity. This means they can absorb/release power at ANY voltage.

So in between your alternator's charging voltage and your battery's voltage potential (13v and below) - this is where caps shine. They basically act like a giant stabilizer. It cushions your drops, absorbs your peaks. I have a video of them which I'll post below. Been meaning to get a second one with the VM-1

that is just impressive results. 2 banks on how much power? a cross fire 8k? lol

snowdrifter i believe has to banks, but he is also running xs p0wer 14volt battery, and charging above 16volts. Like you said @bump4life, higher voltage, equals higher capacity

yes but caps charge and discharge at a linear rate. so it doesnt matter what voltage they are used at. results should be same in a perfect world at any voltage as long as draw is the same

Linear..?

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/electric/capchg.html

Charging current asymptotically goes to zero as it charges.

Then it exponentially discharges.

Energy stored in a cap = 0.5 * C * V^2

Since voltage is squared, energy skyrockets as you increase voltage.
