alt whine, PCM controlled, ground loop sensor, unique situation

Recommended Posts

Lots of threads on this already but none that seems to answer my specific question or solve my exact problem.

2007 Chevy Tahoe, PCM controlled Mechman 370 Elite alt, vehicle has the ground sensor under the hood that the ground has to run through. Can't have additional grounds with the sensor because the PCM controls how much it will ramp up the alt depending how much current the sensor sees so all grounds have to basically pass through the sensor. Mechman confirmed this. Literally go from alt casing, through the sensor to the front batt, then from negative post to next battery and so on, whether you have 1 battery or 100 all negatives have to get connected together without grounding to the frame/chassis/body because then the PCM will not see 100% of the current and your alt will not perform well AND your voltage will fluctuate oddly.

Because of this my amps are grounded right to the rear battery's negative posts and because of this I am getting alt whine that fluctuates with engine RPM.

I tried doing the big 3/4/5 but voltage would be all over the place, eliminated grounds one at a time and same thing. Tried adding grounds in the rear for the rear batts. and same thing. Literally got to the point where I have just the one ground as stated above because extra grounds do not work.

yes, the factory grounds under hood are all still there and go through the sensor as they should.

What else can I do to eliminate the alt whine?

Guest DC Power Kyle

I recommend the opposite. For PCM controlled I tell them to leave the factory wiring in the current sensor and ground additional wires without going through the current sensor. This usually fixes the voltage spikes.

oh shizz, really guys? what do people do to combat it?

I have checked all connections so many times over that it's seriously time for something to change to get rid of it, I thought it was wiring related. I know I have that other thread with the bypass thingy not working or whatever too.... I vaguely remember about someone else with HU as culprit in my reading but I thought that was like a rare case kind of a fluke type of deal or something.

EDIT: typed this before I saw above post

It happens with Pioneer units when a rca is unplugged under power. Piezo bad in unit. I have my power wire for radio running to fuse and constant on the cig lighter. I also have the case grounded on it also. I have no whine in mine. Is the wine at no volume level also? Some ground there rca's plug somehow. Not my choice though.

I would love to help you out but we have chatted a few times with my set up. Honestly the only thing that happens to me with my set up is when I first start it is about 15 to 15.2 on the meter then drops down to 14.7/8 after it gets warmed up. The only time I have seen it drop pretty low was when I went to pass someone the other day and when the vehicle downshifted the volts went down to 14 for a sec but went back up to normal. Not really sure why. You have seen my grounds and the only one that goes through the sensor is the stock one and another 1/0 gauge. don't remember if that is the one to the alt casing or to the body.

Yes, volume at 0 on HU but HU on and it stills whines, changing pitches at different RPM's

I have Qty. 1 of 1/0 AWG OFC going through the sensor as well but no other grounds to speak of (aftermarket grounds anyway)

I have no fluctuation in voltage though. Mine also goes to 15+ at start up then simmers down to about 14.6/14.7

Do you have system hook up to steering wheel controls? Try the rca ground thing!
