moredbs Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 will four 12s move more air than two 18s. i know this is probably a dumb question but I'm trying to decide on what to get.as far as brand they will be fi bl.
Beanz Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Most likely the 2 18s they still have more cone areas than 4 12s. 4 12s =452 and 2 18s Is 508 I belive I'll have to check again That's why they don't deliver. Yer ass better go sit along the side of the road and wait. You can't expect them to travel up some dirt road in a hick / back woods town. Thats how horror movies start I explain things very simply and use analogies in terms of Pickles, and grape drink, pool noodles and jackhammers...if you can't put 2 and 2 together there man, There simply is not much more I can do.
CleanSierra Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 2 18s IS more cone area. Upside to 4 12s: less airspace required for most. There are exceptions to this, the SQ 12" sub likes a lot of airspace, the Sundown Zv3 18" sub doesn't need much air at all. Im not the one you want to try to troll. Just a fyi for you.
bbeljefe Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 There's only about 10% more cone area with 18s so essentially, they can be considered equal to 4 12s where that's concerned. So if the goal is to move air, the next important factor is excursion. Xmax is excursion so look for the subs with the most xmax. And if the 12s and 18s you're looking at have the same xmax, then the 4 12s is the better choice as there is more motor force. moredbs Posted December 28, 2013 Author Report Posted December 28, 2013 thanks for the info everyone. the fi bl series woofers i have been looking at have 18mm xmas for the twelves and 18s. so I'm guessing if i went with 2 18s that have an xmas at 33mm it will be more powerful.

Joe X Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 I would pick the 2 18s just to keep cost under control, with 4 12s you would need to pay for the subs plus 7-8 K amplification and electrical to support it, 2 18s would work well on 4K and output wise would not be too different, just make sure you can fit the 11-12 cubes they require.
moredbs Posted December 28, 2013 Author Report Posted December 28, 2013 im in the process of ordering a dc 370x dual alternater kit with a couple of xs batteries . i want my electrical right, before i start my build.i have 2 rf t2500 amps for the subs i choose. i think i have plenty of air space in the truck bed of my avalanche, but i dont want to use all of it because i have tools i need to haul for work from time to time. thats why i was thinking maybe 4 12s. but mostly 2 18s require just a little more airspace. the sundown 18s i looked at are the smallest cube i have found so far.there isnt any dealers in my area that carry the brands I'm interested in. mtx, kicker ,and jl are top brands in cincinnati smh!
Joe X Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 That's right, if going with Sundown Zs you could nearly match the 4 12s box size.
