Phaeton
So i noticed that a lot of the old school rockford fosgates have big 3-4" voice coils in a 8" to 18" subs, but most subwoofers now have 2.5 or somewhere around there. why isn't anyone putting out the big coils anymore? who wouldn't want a 4" copper coil in a 8"? 1997 subaru legacy outback Four 15's in a almost wall Rockford Fosgate t2500-1bdcp Rockford Fosgate T400-4 on tweets Rockford Fosgate T400-4 on highs Rockford Fosgate T400-2 on midrange Rockford Fosgate T400-2 on midbass Optima Yellow top batteries 270A Singer alt (working on a bracket for a second) Lots of Second Skin

Guest
iirc big coils in tiny woofers = severe excursion limitations
SnowDrifter
"big" coils are the norm around here. You won't find 3" coils in your wall mart / best buy audio though. Fi, AA, Sundown, DC, SQ/AQ, SSA, Atomic, CT sounds, C2 you name it. 3" coils are commonplace ~~~~~~~~SAY NO TO PHOTOBUCKET~~~~~~~~ Snow's DD-1 tracks here: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/167433-snows-dd-1-tracks/ My take on OFC vs CCA: https://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/topic/110381-things-that-piss-you-off-in-the-car-audio-world/?do=findComment&comment=2461444
CleanSierra
You can't get a 4" coil on an 8" sub. There would be no room for a spider one you gouge out 4+ inches from the center of it. Im not the one you want to try to troll. Just a fyi for you.
ChevyBoy95
regardless of the woofer, when you have a bigger coil, you loose the amount of spider you can utilize for excursion. Anything bigger than a 2.5in coil on an 8 goes over the hill from decently high power, high excursion, to really high power, but terribly low excursion, effectively making the design flawed from the get go to suspension issues.
