I've had for years bought legal. i also have 2 pairs of flood lights one on each corner of my house. so family is safe. plus i live in the boonies. but below the waste isn't considered attempted man slaughter. If you don't have the tax stamp to classify it as an aow and you have the forward grip on it you are in possession of an illegal firearm. If the barrel is less than 18.5 inches long it's another strike. It may have been bought legally but what may or may not have been done after purchase is where you can get in a shit load of trouble. I don't exactly suggest it but you never know if the thief in the shadow has a gun or not. yell at him and he might just fire at you. of course if your going to take a shot at least make sure its an intruder and not a family member. if I was certain there wasn't a chance of it being a family member I would shot them in their knee as a warning shot, non fetal but still affective. You have to have tried running away and basically exhausted every option to not be in a life and death situation before you fire a weapon at someone. It covers suppressors full autos and aows. Things like the serbu super shorty shotguns. If you have a pistol grip shotgun with no buttstock so it's basically in a pistol Configuration and a forward grip on the pump it's an aow and you need to go through the atf process. I'm trying to get through to you that it's a felony. It's also easily avoidable.
