I've used GDISK with a few switches and get very good results.

DOD has forensic tools that can read a HDD 7 layers deep, So anything less than that and the data is still accessible ( though not by any schmuck), The only true data eratication is to write 1s or 0s to the disk 7 times over (or more) and then physically destroy the platters or the entire disk.

CURRENT SYSTEM:

dban kicks ass.

There are a few other tools that will do everything from zero the drive, to write random data to all the platters for 48 hours.

As far as SSD drives, its a different animal. SSD's have hardware garbage collection. Basically what that means is when the MFT marks a spot as "empty" it doesn't actually empty that spot right away, it would be too slow to do that on a platter drive, so when new data is written, the old gets written over because it was marked as "empty". This doesn't work too well on an SSD, because the longer you power a cell, the lower the life span of that cell. So to prolong the drive, the firmware on the drive will go through and check the MFT (Master File Table) against the drive and write zeros to those sectors or cells to power them down and extend the life of the drive. This makes forensics on an SSD difficult because as soon as the drive is powered on it starts cleaning up cells.
