lightfoot
the reason it sounds louder with the window cracked a little is because of wave length cancellation. If the window is up you are cancelling the the sound waves into each other. and if the windows are down the wave length is "free" to travel. Krakin
the reason it sounds louder with the window cracked a little is because of wave length cancellation. If the window is up you are cancelling the the sound waves into each other. and if the windows are down the wave length is "free" to travel. Stated in the first page. You are right with a very vague explanation, all I did was just go into detail about it. I would have replied earlier, but I was measuring the output of my amp with a yardstick . . . What you hear is not the air pressure variation in itself but what has drawn your attention in the two streams of superimposed air pressure variations at your eardrums An acoustic event has dimensions of Time, Tone, Loudness and Space Everyone learns to render the 3-dimensional localization of sound based on the individual shape of their ears, thus no formula can achieve a definite effect for every listener. Smurfboy
Mine does the same thing. I had a pair of S10"L7 in a vented box and it pounds. With window down, the bass has increased and I can easily tell. One of the main reason why I prefer summer so that I can enjoy listen to loud music with window down. I love it. Wicks
For the techies , here's an impedance sweep of my sub-box with the cabin sealed up: Here's another sweep with the driver door open: Interesting that my tuning slightly got lower with the door open and the impedance at my upper peak dropped quite a bit, from 15ohms to 9 ohms. That drop in impedance would definitely correlate to an increase in output This post sent with 100% recycled electrons. 2004 BMW M3Mechman 280A 2 - XS Power XP30001 - XS Power D375 500F of Maxwell SuperCaps (soon to be 1000F) iPadMini2Dash mounted O-scopeAudison bitOne (Remote DRC MP) Highs Amp - PPI Art A404 Hertz HSK130 (HSK165 waiting...) gckless
Cancellation has some to do with it, but it's also because when you have something open (door, window, both sides even) your vehicle is essentially acting as a giant horn. You notice the lower frequencies because they have the most to gain, as the wavelengths are so much longer. "Clipping" is the biggest forum boner now. It's like witchcraft... it automatically explains just about everything people don't understand.
