Boon Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Hey guys, Just wondering about upgrading the electrical... I have a Toyota Corolla with a reasonably large system in it... I would say 5000wrms at full tit at the moment. As for the electrical, all I have is a single Optima Yellowtop (a very tired one at that) under the bonnet. I have done the 'big 3' with 0 gauge but the alternator wire I only did in 4ga. The alternator is the stock 60 or 90A one. Now, I suffer pretty massive voltage drop, down to 11.9ish when I burp or a big note hits - that's car on or car off. Seems like the Alt doesn't really do much Despite this, the system runs sweet. At a show I had it wanging hard for about an hour with just the engine running at idle. Voltage got down to 11.7v but that was it. My next system is going to have about twice the power and I have a pile of AGM batteries lined up for that, but how important is it really? 11.9v isn't tragic, and where I live high-output alternators will burn you for $850US or more, which is money I could be spending on other bits of the system... Just interested to see what you guys reckon 10.x volts fo' life!
BackYardSoundZ Posted March 18, 2008 Report Posted March 18, 2008 Id start out with an upgraded alt and doin the 0gauge on that, maybe replace the yellow top if its dying, then see if 1 battery will be enough, but i wouldnt buy batteries b4 the alt. With an upgraded alt you will barely notice a mileage decrease, now if you start running 2 or more alts youll start to notice.
bass 4 love Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Yeah, that alternator will make a big difference!!! i was buying batteries left and right trying to get more power but i slowed down a little and figure that the alternator would be my next step! i have a 160 amp but the car came with a 105 and it went out on me one night thank god i bought that yellow top 2days before!!!!!!!
polochris Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 If you can manage to upgrade Alternator do it, when a battery drops so low it never charges the same again. I'd say 1/2 battries in boot, 1 under hood with a good alternator you will be laughing. KICKER Livin' Loud
bassmachine Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 that happen to me 2, i run 3000rms and bought a trojan deep cycle and a optima and that sucker stays around 14.5-.6 at full blast, trojans are preety good, the guy just warned me that the discharge rate is a lil slow.but nothing to b worried about. MECHMAN Posted June 13, 2008 Report Posted June 13, 2008 you should seriously check out excessiveamperage.com!! 00sdime00 runs excessiveamperage alts and I have a single 225 amp alt from them, and it is incredible!!! We have a large case conversion bracket kit that includes an adapter bracket, alternator, and plug-n-play harness for $449 shipped. Because it's twice the size of the stock corrola alternator, it will produce an honest 225amps with excellent output at idle. We don't ship internationally, but if you wanted to use a freight forwarder in the U.S. we would be happy to sell you one.
