What do people mean by having your bass eq flat on your head unit?

While looking up how to tune amps everybody says have your eq bass on your HU set to flat? Does that mean -6, or does it mean 0?

You're describing master volume level I feel. Those other people are describing level at a certain frequency.

"Clipping" is the biggest forum boner now. It's like witchcraft... it automatically explains just about everything people don't understand.

When you use loudness, bass boost, and your equalizer settings are adjusted, your more likely to get a lot of distortion. So leaving it flat is where your really going to get a good clean signal from the HU at.
With a Good system, any HU maybe with some 4v preouts, and tune it on the amps.. If you have a crossover or processor its even better but you should get all the sound you need.

Ahh also 0 on your EQ setting would be flat also btw.

Im just trying to figure out what my levels should be on my JVC kdr300 HU, I go to EQ > user > then it takes me to Bass, Mid, Treble.. If I have me bass level at -6 (lowest) I need to have my gain @ 3/4 way up but if I have it at 0 I dont need to have gain that high at all?

Bass, mid, treble would be flat @ 0 but to really be sure read your manual. Gain? Are we talking volume on the HU or on a amp?

Set everything flat on the HU, buy or find a DD1 ( distortion detector ) Find your max volume without distortion. then do the same with your amp. You cant really know where to set your volume and gain without it.
