3.7cb per 12" isnt a bit much?

im about to do an enclosure for the new db drive wdx3k subs for someone, its a new line from db. the manual reccomends 3.7 cubes per 12" i thought it was a bit much so i called db tech and he told me around 1.5 cubes should be good, so am confused lol 1.5 is a long way from 3.7cb they stated in the manual for optimum. any advice appreciated.

I would guess he meant 1.5 sealed. That would put ported in the 2.5-3.5 range I would think.

I mean ive never personally ran a 12 in anything bigger than 2.5cuft ported. So imo that iss a bit much (3.5cf) for a car stereo application. Especially for a simple ported box.

I would just double check that figure. Call em again if you have to.

Its not that 3.5 wouldnt work, just make sure to stick to recommended power levels and dont play below tuning too much etc.

The manufacturers know what their doing, though on 12s I have never even reached 3 cubes lol. But that recommendation should be ok especially if you don't over-power the subs

Don't manufacturers typically "recommend" a much smaller than the true "optimal" large size box... to be more appealing to the average buyer? In this case they've blown that out of the water by far... And are recommending a box size that is unheard of.

It does seem like a lot of volume only because it is a ''competition'' subwoofer.

It really depends on what you want out of if.

15 years ago 12" sub's were getting reccomendations like that from manufacturer's for a ported enclosure. I can remember the Vega series woofers had a reccomended size for deep bass at 3 cubes. Now a days this is very unnecessary due to the ridiculous amount of power being run and the improvements on subwoofers themselves. Back then your average loud system was maybe 2 amps that did 1000 watts tops, and a pair of sub's. Shit has changed quite a bit.

3.7 is fine if your running low to medium power. Bigger box is how you get loud on low power.
It would cause problem at higher power, usually the more power you want to throw at a sub, the smaller the box needs to be.
But it also depends on what you want to tune the enclosure to.

I'd personally try to get it in the 2 - 2.5ft^3 range. Or smaller if your running a ton of power to them.
I had my three 12's in 7.5 cubes total, @33hz, and they loved it, and sounded awesome. Until I gave them too much power....

If the volume is correct (and I have not seen any specs) looks like you could fit 2 15s in the same space, better those have awesome excursion or something else great going for them, otherwise seem to me like an awful waste of space.

thanks guys 3.7 does seem like a bit much so ill do it at about 2.5 with 40sq port per sub. not exactly sure on the exact power this guy is goin to run to the sub but knowing him he'll be above rms.
