Reasonable Power Handling for a 1.5" Voice Coil

my first guess would be not enough coil movement if you have it crossed over at 120hz. if it's an actual sub it likely relies on the voice coil moving to help cool it, playing it at higher frequencies probably limits that movement. Just a guess though, tons of other reasons.

HPF at 120. Was there any LPF? Maybe it didn't appreciate being played above the 350hz range is was designed for.

I've tried it on lower frequencies and the same thing happens at about the same power I think some movement would help but it has vc rub when it starts moving too much. It was smacked against the back plate once or twice when I first traded for it so you can't push it real hard very low without it making this horrible clicking.

These lil' guys are very mechanically limited. I wouldn't say more than 3/4" an inch of maximum excursion peak to peak and it reaches that on very little power. Maybe this one it just too destroyed. Can't play low enough to cool itself and can't play high enough to be used as a midrange.

if the VC is limiting how much the cone can move that could be your issue.

Alright, looks like it will be shoved in the corner of shame. I'd be interested to see if a new one could do what it says. They recommend very small sealed boxes which would make sense if you have to limit mechanic movement some. Maybe that's how they do it. Too bad no one makes a 6.5" recone! XD

More generally though, how much power do you think a high quality 1.5" vc would take? Something like the American Bass XD 65. I'm planning a tiny build for my dad and that and a few other similar 6.5"s caught my eye. Would it do just about that 150 watts or more?

It's rated at 150W. I'd guess......150W RMS is what it will handle.

any reason your only looking at 6.5"subs? get something a little bit bigger with higher pwr handeling

Mostly I just find them to be pretty cool little things. So compact. But my dad wants sq and low end response more than spl and doesn't want it to take up much space. Figure probably the smallest I'm gonna be able to do is a 6.5" or 8" and I've come up with some designs in winisd for a 6th order band pass that would play down to like 29hz at or above 0db gain then down to like 25 at -3db.

Just wondering if it's underrated like most other good subs.
