help me understand aeroport to sq inches

Masterbasser

Recommended Posts

pi x r x r gives area of a circle

to calculate PORT area, you'd find the circumference of the circle (2 x r) and multiply the result by port length

yeah science

What?

Masterbasser had it right.

Circumference x length = inside surface area of the port, not useful for what we are doing. And 2 x R is diameter, not circumference.

doh! forgot the pi in my circumference equation, and now see that you're comparing square ports to aero ones

the speaker im lookin at calls for 40 square inches of port at 10 inches in length for a tune around 34 hertz, street bass setup. does that seem right for an 18? i have been told by some friends that 10 inches for a port is way to short but thats what it is calling for on the spec sheet i have here

dont really want to post any brand want to keep it on the downlow for now

this is exactly what it says word for word though

All displacements for port and driver already figured. All power measurements are for port noise on ported enclosure and cone displacement on sealed enclosure. SB= street bass Spl=competition

Ported- 6.0 ft3 40 Square inches of port X 10 inches in length 32 hertz at 5000 watts SB

Ported- 6.0 ft3 120 square inches of port X 1 inches in length 65 hertz 5000 watts SPL

Bandpass- rear chamber 3.0 ft3 sealed

Front chamber 6.0 ft3 100 square inches of port at 8 inches in length 72 hertz

Bandwidth 50-78 hertz 5000 watts SPL

i want to go for the ported street bass since all i have is 6 cubic feet for the box

Unfortunately the box specs don't really help us. I can tell you that 40 sq in of port area seams really small for an 18" but without the specs on the subs I can't tell you what would be an appropriate amount.

If you want us to help you, you need to give us the specs on your sub.

think the enclosure specs are garbage, no real parameters since subs are built to custom order, at least not yet

prolly just build to 18" dd9518 enclosure specs, 100s q inch port length around 26 inches of port

pi x r x r gives area of a circle

to calculate PORT area, you'd find the circumference of the circle (2 x r x pi) and multiply the result by port length

yeah science

multiplying by the length gives you port volume, not area.

trying to under stand why an 18" sub calls for 40 sq inch of port a 10 inch of length

does it have soemthing to do with the length of the port being shorter so the air does not become as pressurized going down a long slot/tube so 40 sq inch of port seems like a larger port area to the subwoofer?
