If you own a DD-1, is the + version worth it?

I have a DD-, I like it, and although I have only used it once to tune my system and have had it over a year I don't regret purchasing it.

I am intrigued by the DD-1+ but am on the fence about making the purchase... $250. I asked about a trade in program when they first came out but I don't think there is one. Yeah I could sell my DD-1 but it's signed by Meade and I really don't want to try to sell it. I am not one of the lucky ones that can just drop hundreds of dollars on a new gadget whenever they want to. If I was in that position i would own all of the SMD tools and meters. I could buy it on credit but I am unemployed right now and that would be against my better judgement, although I could probably be convinced

I watched Steve's YouTube video about the DD-1+, searched the forum for topics, and even downloaded the owners manual and am still left with questions about exactly how gain overlap compares to using the various DD-1 tracks. Say for example you have a DD-1+ and you set the gain overlap to 10db, how does that differ from just having the DD-1 and using the -10db track?

Also, how do you know what type of overlap to use when you have fully variable adjustment from 0-15db?

If you've only used your dd1 once in the past year and are currently unemployed, In my opinion the added benefits of the + are not worth going $250 into debt.

But if you sold your dd1 I'm sure Steve would sign your new one.

I mean if you only used your current dd-1 once on your system, I wouldn't feel it being a good investment for the dd-1+ since your not getting much use out of the current model you own.

Now if you where installing or doing lots of installs it could be a legit tool on hand especially for warranty issues on customers adjusting their amps after you tuned them, the dd-1+ is GREAT for that.

I love my dd-1+ and rarely if at all touch my dd-1, but like i said if you don't use it much I couldn't justify it when there are many more great tools.

Now maybe you could sell your old dd-1 to a friend to help fund the new one or something as well, just an idea.

But I would put your money into something like a CC-1 to get your crossovers on your amps dialed in, especially if your running a 4 channel or active and Id feel you get more use from that than a dd-1+.

Just my opinion tho.

I agree that If I were to drop the 250 or whatever it is on an SMD tool, it could be better spent. I really just want to learn the difference between the gain overlap feature on the + model and using the various tracks i.e. 0db, -10db etc.

-10db on the Plus version and -10db on the original version are both the same. The difference is that you can adjust your overlaps down to the tenth from 15db down instead of only having 4 choices. With a new digital readout, you can actually see on screen what is happening. You can see where gains are when the customer shows up (and know how F##KED UP they really are, and they ALWAYS are). You can set the gains properly and record the results so you know if they were tampered with at a later time. It has HV parts inside of it so it can take ANY amp on the market even @18v fully clipped and not blow up. It has a few other useful features as well.

But if you only used your's once, you have no current job, i don't suggest you order up the new model. Leave well enough alone for now. The standard DD-1 is still the flagship of our brand and will do just fine Upgrade when you are ready to get even more serious, but right now you should be ok.
