whats your voltage drop on 5k?

Recommended Posts

I reconed a subwoofer from dual 2 ohm to dual 1.4, so its wired down to .7 on a atomic 5000.1d.

I am gettn some pretty gnarly voltage drop atm was curious if something might be wrong

I am running a mechman 320 amp hairpin alt and just a stock fleet farm battery and i am getting voltage drop at 2k engine rpm from 15 volts to 12.5. with headlights on they dim incredibly.

was looking for some input from other guys running 5k amplifiers and what kind of drop they get

You have no reserve, so yes, you are going to drop hard.

Once you pull more than ~320a worth or ~4000watts of power out of that amp, you are going to battery power which is why you are dropping. Once your alt is maxed out, the rest of the draw essentially is on the back of you batteries to carry until the alt can catch back up.

If you had one or two solid batteries for a rear reserve, or even swapped your stock for a better AGM, you would see improvement. But at a minimum, I would add 1 rear group 31 AGM, whether it be northstar, XS, shuriken, etc. And I bet you would be 13.0v + @ 2krpm

I had a 5k @ .7 with a 200a alt a couple years ago, but had 6 batteries on it and dropped to 13.5v at idle full tilt.

2 SQ 3500's newest version 4300+ watts each, DC Power 370XP hairpin, XS D4800, XS D3400, 2 XS D3100, 6 XS XP3000, drops into 13's easily all the time (14.9 hot charge) but at very low 13's I hit battery resting and it's very solid then and doesn't go below that.

When I had Mechman 370 Elite hairpin and 2 RF T2500-1bdcp's it was the same deal, low 13's and it held like a rock because of battery resting and 10 XS Power batts.

I also usually have around 3 mids/highs amps as well.

If you have a big enough battery bank then when alt can't keep up it will help to not allow amp to see too low of voltage, cushion.

12's aren't too bad but if your lights are dimming and that's all you got for batt. bank now then I would up your batt. bank just a tad.
