its also used at low volumes to boost frequencies that are naturally attenuated. if you are nearing full tilt make sure it is off or it will clip your signal

Agreed. I don't use it. Even on the heavily compressed mp3's I have. You're better off not using it at all in my opinion. The difference is unnoticeable except for lower frequencies to me.
