Wehan Posted October 8, 2015 Report Posted October 8, 2015 Presuming you're talking about the alt to under the hood batt connection, and not a long run to the amp(s), then I agree with hdorre. Just a run of 1/0 from alt to batt, no fuse is what I do. The odds of you creating enough current to damage that short of a run is it won't happen. i think of fusing that wire as more of a fuse for the battery's sake, not so much for the alternator. i don't fuse that lead, though, because it's shorter and safer if wisely run. The alternator SHOULD detect the short and shut down, as for the battery at the other end...not so much.

If the wire shorts the alt can stop putting out power all it wants but you will still have a dead short. True for some then, The Denso Alternator on my 93 Jeep Wrangler shut down when I foolishly routed a 10ga wire into the cab with no fuse (I was young and retarded) melted on the cylinder head and shorted, in fact that's the only reason I knew it happened because it was at night and all my lights dimmed and the volt gauge dropped from 14.5 to 12v. I pulled over and saw the wire smoking so I whipped out my leatherman and cut it at the battery. I had to shut down the Jeep and start it again to get the volt meter to go back to normal.
