Has anybody ever been let down by the Minimum Port Area???

Just like the title says.... Has anybody ever been let down after using the Minimum port area formula? Ive never used that formula and have always used the 12-16 rule. I only want to build this box once. I've got 2 18" Sundown SA18 and according to that formula says I should use about 206 square. I have enough room for that port but just checking before going any further

what formula?

edit: nvm, i see now. Whats your port velocity with 206sqin?

My rule of thumb is 35-50 for 12's, 65-80 for 15's, and 95-105 for 18's, regardless of box size.

I have used the 12-16 many times, and most of my best boxes broke out of the 12-16. Favorite window line box was 19sq in per cube, and current box that is my #1 fav is 19.6 sq in of port per cube

Port is better determined off of the amount of air the cone can displace, rather than the size of the box.

I don't know how to figure the port velocity... do you have a link to the formula or can you help me find it

There isn't a formula, you need to use some kind of box modeling software like WinISD, BassBoxPro, Hornresp, etc. You want to keep port velocity under 33 m/sec, and under 26 m/sec would be much better.

Lower port velocity is generally better. Though ports can become so long they are difficult to implement in your box so sometimes design compromises have to be made. Also if ports get much over 45" long they can create other problems.
