Wicks Posted December 22, 2015 Report Share Posted December 22, 2015 Anybody experience an engine idle fluctuation when using supercaps? When I connect a bank of 500F in my car, my idle will fluctuate a couple hundred RPMs every couple of seconds. It's not a big deal other then being annoying while sitting at a red light. When driving (higher RPMs), it goes away. When I remove one of the leads to the caps, the issue goes away. So it is the caps that are inducing it somehow. I've tried two banks with the same results. I thought it was the balancing modules but both my banks do the same thing. I'll remove the modules and try again to see if that helps, but they're fine on a test bench with a power supply. With a current clamp, I saw about 20A flowing in and out of the caps while the idle was fluctuating... Ideas? 3vil Posted December 22, 2015 Report Share Posted December 22, 2015 Find it if your vehicle has something like Bypass Air Control, or Idle Air Control. These are basically little valves that increase the engine rpm a tad to compensate for the added electrical load. They can get gummed up over time and need to be cleaned it even replaced. What your engine is doing is Idle Hunting it sounds like. It sees an increase in current draw to top the caps off so it raises the idle a hair, but then the caps fill and the demand disappears, causing the idle to drop again.
