Bayuk89 Posted December 23, 2015 Report Posted December 23, 2015 i just build a box for a 15" subwoofer tuned to 32hz, on my amp the dial sweeps from 15-55 hz on the SSF. I think i need the SSF to be around 30hz ? I have an idea where it is on the dial so i marked it there, then un plugged my sub and hooked up my DMM on a/c volts. Put in a 30 hz sine wave test tone and went from 55 hz on the SSF and tuned down till i saw a flucuation in voltage and i stopped there which looks close to 30 hz would be if it was marked. Being tuned at 32 do i need to set the filter lower than 30 ? This is my first ported box, thank you for ur help.
reedal Posted December 23, 2015 Report Posted December 23, 2015 The rule of thumb is it should be set no more than one half octave lower than tuning frequency. so half of 32 is 16, half is 8, so 32 minus 8 is 24. 24hz would be your setting going by that. I don't agree with that though, because depending on the response of your enclosure you might run into problems starting at 30hz or 28hz, etc. I keep mine turned off and just listen for unloading, then turn it down. I will turn my knob down to about 24 then and go from there. I just wish there was a set notch with all frequencys on my amp instead of a sweep dial from 15-55. I can only get a ball park idea where im at lol.

reedal Posted December 23, 2015 Report Posted December 23, 2015 Unloading is when the subs are losing their mechanical control. I suppose "fluffing" could be used to describe the noise coming from it. As tarball suggested, the CC-1 is a tool to set filters where you want them. Just remember that even if you go by the "rule of thumb", that does not mean you won't have unloading issues, and you could still damage the sub playing high volume at those frequencies. Just keep an ear out for it, and turn the SSF up as you need in order to prevent damage. Bayuk89 Posted December 23, 2015 Author Report Posted December 23, 2015 Thank you tarball and reedal i will keep an ear out for funky sounds and what not. Im running a budget build right now. I NEED to invest in better/proper testing tools. I only have a DMM and my ears to help me get close to where i think i shoukd be. When i save up money for my next build i will price in a hand held oscilioscope, dd-1 and such. Thanks again for the helpful input.
