Door Pods For My Truckie..........

Recommended Posts

The tools I have found most usefull when sanding curves and irregular shapes are called SANDBLASTERS.

Basically a stiff sponge with sandpaper texture all over the outside and they will conform to w/e you rub them against yet they're rectangular so you still have some sharp edges and flat sides to work with if need be. They have them in 2.5"x3"x1" lil rectangles and also "rubberized mat" thats thinner and flexible...very handy and you can fold it over on itself and get into all kinds of nooks and tight spots w/ them.

i think i know what you're talkin about. i think i have some actually. didnt use em on my last project cuz they were too fine of a grade. good for wetsanding tho. i was thinkin somethin maybe electric, or maybe i could just work harder during the filler process to prevent so much sanding next time :P what's it called? the 'green' stage or somethin? sanding before it's completely dry to minimize it

Yea green stage sanding is good for removing BIG imperfections...I don't like to GUM UP my sandpaper tho...which it will do with a quickness....I usually just catch it in the "green" or "soft" stage and trim it with a razor blade to get rid of lil mountians and bumps.

Green stage sanding takes some practice..more so than regular sanding cuz the consistencey has to be just right or 1 of 2 things happen: 1-you remove too much material and end up making it worse in that spot and have to refill it...or 2-the material you remove turns into lil "rolly polly chunks" that just get dragged across the surface and also usually make more imperfections in the soft surface.

Razorblade it FTW.

I'm on a slight deadline. I need them ready by next weekend. I might just roll to the show half done and finish them off later. It would look great if they were painted black. Now should I go flat or gloss?

Gloss or flat huh??

Ima flat fan myself, but gloss ,makes it pop!

For green stage removal I use my trusty Stanley Surform planes...they look like a cheese grater..and do heavy removal and shaping without clogging up. It will make your life 10 billion x's easier.

Lookin real good man.

Nice clean start, now just gotta finish strong too.

I would suggest...If I may...if it's doable/open on the backside of the pod...lay some glass mat on the inside to strengthen em up without messin up ur nice clean outter surface...then you can skin-it with filler/resin milkshake and minimize your sanding.

They sell em at autparts stores like Kragen/Autozone/pepboys in the Fglass section.

Keep up the progress, and I TOTALLY feel ya on the midnight sanding sessions. Kiss ur shoulders goodbye.

Thanks for the tips man. The back side is pretty sealed up with mdf though. I'm gonna really see how its looking after i put the first layer of filler down to decide how far to prep it. I also thought about filling with some foam and the rest polly? would you recommend either or none?

WHATS THIS GREEN STAGE YOU GUYS SPEAK OF????

YOU GUYS ARE SCARING ME NOW!!!!!!!!:unsure:

Right before the filler fully cures....and right after it's gel state....it turns somewhat firm yet is easy to remove...using sureform's when the filler is in this stage makes for QUICK removal and easy clean up too..

You have A LOT of airspace in there already from the looks of it...I wouldn't worry too much bout poly-fillin it unless it's "To punchy" on the midbass somehow...more air..or adding poly-fill will make the "enclosure" act like a BIGGER one and the "woofer" workin in that airspace will lose some punchiness but go "lower" permitting it's allowed to via xover setting.

Green stage is before the filler is hard. While it's curing it'll get kinda rubbery and you could dig at it w/ ur fingernails or scar it w/ any sharp tool...you can remove some high spots at this point rather than having to sand all the hardened stuff.

No worries bro, have no fear. If it seems intimidating just forget it until you're more comfortable and feel like tryin it.

Do what You're comfotable doin, the end result will be better if you can work on it w/ confidence rather than goin out on a limb.

Edit* I type too slow I guess
