Big voltage drop at idle

Recommended Posts

My setup:

2006 Infiniti G35 Coupe 6 MT

2 10in. DC Audio Level 3s

Crescendo Audio bc2000.1

Pioneer AVH-4000NEX

Mechman 270 Amp HO Alternator

Big 3 done in Soundqubed 1/0 gauge OFC

Power wire 1/0 gauge OFC Sky High Car Audio

Ground wire 1/0 gauge OFC Soundqubed ran from the amp to the battery

Starting battery/Only battery XS Power D3400

Stinger Volt meter wired straight to my head unit

Problem:

So I just recently installed the HO alternator due to my stock 120 amp not being enough. The install went smooth. Started up my car just fine, resting voltage is 14.2-14.4v. When driving I have no issues my voltage sits at 14v and very rarely drops to 13.9v. My car idles at about 600 RPM or so. According to mechanical my alt should make about 130 amps at 600 RPM. Its rated for 800 rpm, and does 173 at 800. When idling my voltage drops down to lower 12vs and bounces all over the place. Sometimes it even gets down to high 11vs. What can I do to fix this? I want to be able to play full tilt while idling at a stop light or coming to a stop.

I understand that you idle at 600 rpms. However, when your volume is up, does your idle drop a tad lower?

Also, are you wired to .5 or 1? If wired to .5, that makes complete sense. You are drawing more power than your alternator supplies, which drops you into resting. From there, additional power is being pulled from your battery.

sounds like ur alts not charging at idle, same way my 320 was

I ended up raising my idle with a zip tie on the throttle cable to throttle body area

Sounds about right got 4K RMS and at stop lights drop to 12.7-12.9 u may need more batteries to help alittle, I got 6 batteries . I also see your alt not charging really high when I put my HO alt on I went from 14.4 to 14.9-15v , u should be charging more then stock voltage that's the point of a HO alt.

You need batteries in the back. When the voltage bounces around it is because the voltage regulator can't react fast enough for the demand. A battery or two in the back will help a lot.

How should I wire the second battery? Should I use an isolator?

Also, when I'm full tilt my idle does bounce a lot. Goes back and forth up and down.

I'm wired to 1 ohm.

I've looked into ways to raise my idle, but there doesn't seem to be a way on my car without reflashing it. There's no idle adjustment screw. Also, sorry for all the posts. I'm on my phone..

Positive from front battery to positive on rear, grounds go to body grounds .

Your car is a fly by wire throttle no cable , not going to be easy to adjust it. Still with that HO alt in park idleing system off u should see more then 14.4 , should be close to 15 I think that's odd.
