Help, Subs Compared To Cone Area

Recommended Posts

by no means am i a ground pounder but cone area is the way to go if u have the room.

for example: my friend and i have the same amount of power ~1000rms. he has a 12" RF T2 sub. i have 2 15" Kicker CVR's. mine is definately louder than his, even if my box is about half the size it should be.

plus we paid about the same

but your buddy has the upper hand on quality and probably sq

Nothing better than cone area. But Running 4 subs sometimes isent nearly as loud as just 2 12"s. Example haveing enough box space for each to maximize its potential is a big key factor. If you have enough box space for the multiple subs, let alone the power, electrical, amp power than absolutely!

what are you SMOKING

ive seen the cvrs even owned some 12s

and ive installed a t2 in a buddys car.

trust me the t2 has WAYYYYY better build quality. and much better sound quality.

yours will be louder soely due to cone area. nothing less nothing more .

for everyday bumpage a t2 is nothing to sneeze at.

aight cool, i mean, i dont plan on actually being a groundpounder, but thats what i plan on going for when i get a new car, this EXT ranger doesnt have much room = ( figured i could try to toss 4 12s back there and get some decent sounds. i just want to be louder than my friend who wasted 3500 for 2 12w3's in the trunk of his 05' grand prix

$3500 for 2-12w3s?

Oooouuuch!

damn, $3500 for two $250 subs installed is crazy. Must have a big amp and super custom box

I would hope soo...@ least...

I dunno if you can so that so matter-of-factley...

2 12's vs 2 12's.....cone area advantage? do you know the effective SD of each woofer?

Plus, It has a BIT to do with the install.

2 well installed CVR 12's (or just about any WELL installed vs poorly installed for that matter) will PWN some poorly installed stuff.

Assuming the T2's and CVRs are Both installed properly, the T2's should win, but on product alone there's no real way to tell...the install matters too much...what if the 2-T2 12's are in a VAN or excursion and the CVR 12's are in some tiny Hatch?

Look at the DISPLACEMENT of each woofer to choose subs...SD (cone area) X(times) XMAX (excursion) will give you the amount of air you will actually be moving, and then just make sure it's installed by someone who knows what's up.

It's not just cone area. That's why 8 12's in prefab boxes recently got a whole 119dB at a soundoff here recently. Whereas 1 12" in a custom (pure spl though) box did 145s all day.

It's very important to keep the following (theoretical but very applicable) rule in mind:

Double the cone area, gain 3dB

Double the power, gain 3dB

So all things being equal, a single 12" with 1000w should be as loud as 2 12"s with 500w each.

Except in this case because you have a single $250 12" instead of 2 $125 12"s the speaker is more efficient and better made - thus it's possible for 1 12 to be louder AND sound better than 2 12's with the same power!

the one guy has two 15s the other 1 12

if you had the 15s in the optimum box optimum wattage with optimum voltage. it would be louder than the one 12 due to cone area..

but if you had two 12s with everything perfect as mentioned above the two 12s would probably keep up because of more excursion but the 15s would still be slightly louder due to cone area..

also the t2 has the upper hand on overall quality. imho

also with the example of 8 12s im sure there is some cancelation goin on..

also doesnt a smaller box raise the overall freq response?

if this is the case couldnt it cause distortion. or higher frequencys giving a false sense of loudness?

feel free to crack the whip on me if im wrong or outta line.

two twelves have more Sd than one 15

-Drew

the kid has 2 15s ..

the other kid has one 12...

that means the TWO 15s beat the ONE 12 due to more cone area

BUT if you had 2 t2s it would keep up with the two 15s because they have more xmax than the 15s
