Sound deadening: looking for opinions/tips

Recommended Posts

My vehicle is a 2008 Civic Coupe with the sun roof and so far I have added a basic amount of Dynamat Xtreme to the trunk lid (about 50% coverage), to the spare tire semi circle (about 20/30 % coverage) and to the outer skin on my doors (about 30/40% coverage), focusing some more directly behind the 6.5s. The setup I have now is a set of RF T2 components (P600x4) and 2x RF P3 12s (DC 2k).

Some pics for reference:

Spare Tire and Trunk stripped down:

Now the questions I have are;

1 Should I cover the outer skin of the doors more before I cover the holes for the window mechanism maintenance with some thick metal sheets (with deadener and something like damp rope to seal the edges) and rivets with machine screws for removal. Kind of like how mark did on his YouTube channel here but with metal instead of plastic. Or is the coverage I have currently enough for this to make any difference. Also should I use something like the luxury liner he uses, or is that overkill for a daily driver?

2 Would covering the wheel wells completely with a constrain layer like damplifier or dynamat xtreme get rid of the road noise when driving in the rain? or would I need to use the constrain layer with another foam layer like dynaliner?

3 Could I just 86 my headliner and replace it with dynamat xtreme and dynaliner for thermal insulation? my current one is already sagging but the sun roof is keeping it off my head.

Thanks for any tips/help on this!

Cheers

1 - Can't really see how much coverage you have in the doors, but if you did about 50-60% coverage on the outer door skin, you should be good. For the inner door panel that has bent metal and welds, you can scale it back to 40% if you want and still have similar effectiveness if you aren't pushing a lot of dB's. If your system is pushing a lot of dB's I would recommend more coverage.Your use of the butyl rope sounds like it would be good to strengthen the welds and connections. Also, this specific video of Mark's is for increasing mid bass in your door speakers, if that is not your goal, you do not need to cover those holes with MLV or plastic.

2 - There are two types of noise that cause problems in a vehicle; The first is structure borne noise, the resonance that actually travels through the structure of the car, and can be caused by the road as well as loud speakers, engine, or exhaust. To absorb this noise, use Damplifier, Damplifier Pro (CLD), or Spectrum . These products are applied directly to the sheet metal,fiber glass or carbon fiber, where the butyl acts as a medium that any vibrations travel into, mechanically induced or natural. Our 6.5mil annealed aluminum foil layer then constrains the vibrations within the butyl rubber, or in Spectrum’s case the acrylic polymers in the paint acts as one giant, dense constraint layer, preventing the structure from vibrating and letting the vibrations through to turn into sound waves in the air.

There is a second type of noise called airborne noise. This noise is a higher frequency over spill that the Damplifier Pro or Spectrum can’t absorb or block. To help block this, install Luxury Liner Pro (Mass Loaded Vinyl + Closed Cell Foam) on top of the Damplifier pro or Spectrum on the interior of the vehicle. The closed cell foam acts as a decoupler and the mass loaded vinyl  blocks out the stubborn air borne noise. You can not block out engine, tire, exhaust, turbo, or diesel noises without using a barrier layer of Mass Loaded Vinyl or lead of some type. These two products (CLD + MLV) in conjunction make one of the most effective and highest quality Thermal-Acoustic barrier available on the market today, so your vehicle won’t only be insulated from sound, it will also be insulated from extreme temperatures as well!

3 - Buty deadening sheets will help with the heat transfer, you will need to add a product like Heat Wave Pro or Mega Zorbe to actually insulate for the heat though, which will help your A/C work better also. Here are the Roof Kits we offer.

Thanks a lot for the info   @Second Skin.  I actually ordered one of your test patches so I could see your products first hand and decide what would best fit my situation.
