Setting Gain On Amp - No Load?

Recommended Posts

OKay so I read through allll the gain topics thouroughly (SP)

my question is, my dad is an electrical engineer and he "huh'd?" at the way I explained it to him.

it says use a dMM on AC volts .... unhook the sub and set it to, for me , 34 volts for around 1200 watts at 1 ohm. but there isno load on the amp with the speaker unhooked - how does that work?

is this alread taken in account in that big chart of AC volts and wattages at what impedence that is on the forum?

thx hope this made sense

yes the impendance is already taken into account for ac voltage.

i know they take into account the IMPEDENCE but i mean no LOAD on the amp .. you know what im saying? sorry if this is confusing

are you saying that you dno what to adjust it to since the amp isnt seeing a load? since the speakers are unhooked and all?

at first i thought you werent getting a reading. but am i close? lol i think i know what you're saying, it's just hard to word.

yes sir exactly. i don't have the amp yet - i'm asking this because the amp should come tues or wed so i want to know how to set the gains

if the amp isn't seeing a load (beacuse speakers are unhooked) iis it still correct to use that chart? 34 votls ac for ~1200 watts RMS @ 1 ohm?

Thanks expo ...

You're right, just use the chart and you'll be fine. That's why the ohm loads are on it.

Thanks for planning on setting your amps up right the first time... That dosn't happen as much as it should.

yes you want to adjust tune the amp according to the way you will wire it all up. when the amp sees a 1 ohm load, it'll put out the power you adjusted it to. now say you adjusted it to that voltage, and wired it to a 2 ohm load (i'm not sure which chart you went by, but ima go by the one in my sig) you'll be getting 600 watts. notice the voltage rating is the same -- 34.64 volts for 600 watts @ 2 ohms and 34.64 volts for 1200 watts @ 1 ohm.

so basically when tuning your amp, you want to adjust the voltage according to the power you want/need with the given ohm load into consideration. which is why the chart includes all those ohm ratings. so that way if you need 500 watts with a 4 ohm load, you wont tune it to a 1 ohm load, which would put out less power since the amp 'thinks' it's seeing less resistance since that's what it was tuned to.

that make sense or did i just ramble? lol i'll try to clear some up if so
