Aaron813
Ok a few months back I bought a 2000 Chevy Silverado LT 4x4. It has a vortec 5.3 engine in it, well it seems to knock pretty bad on startup it tends to knock when its cold outside it knocks for about 1.5 to 2 minutes it doesnt do it as often when it is warm outside but when it is cold outside it does it everyday. I go to start the truck up before school 7.30 it knocks for about 2 minutes or so then ill let it warm up for about 15 minutes I get out of school at 3.15 I go start it up and it knocks for about 2 minutes. My question is how do I get rid of that horrible knocking sound? is it just that the oil isnt flowing yet or what.

Aaron813
HMM so GM wont do anything for me then im guessing if that ends up being the case I think im going to have a 6.0 liter swapped into it instead of having it repaired
meade916
mine does it every single day (on first, cold start). After a few minutes it stops. Dont worry about it....if it does it 10 miles down the road, then start worrying about it... RHoughton1
Almost all of the newer GM engines in the trucks do that ,even the 8.1 496.. There was a forum somewhere where some one offered a fix to this it was a swap out of the oil filter mount and a pre lube system of some sort... 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it,' unless you're a tweaker, and in that case you already fixed it ten times and it's still broken. - Dave Mustaine

audiofanaticz
my hoe knocks too upon cold start where its sat for 8-10 hours before starting. Its just that your oil is so cold which makes it thick and takes a while for it to get from the oil pan on the bottom of the motor to the top of the motor to lubercate your rockers. You will also notice you have very high oil pressure at idle (around 50-60) until the engine warms up then drops to 30-40 at idle. Running a 5w30 weight oil in your vehicle in the colder temps will help a bit, then run something like 10w30 in summer.
