Stopping Trunk Rattle......HELP!!

Recommended Posts

First off...awesome site, I love the videos! My question is pretty basic and everyone has had this battle at one time or another. I'm just looking for some helpful tips to stop the annoying rattling and vibrating from my trunk and other parts of the car. The majority of my trunk is lined with dynamat, but there are still areas where dynamat couldnt be placed and the noise i get from these spots kills my bass and it sounds like crap. I'm looking forward to the responses and keep up the good work!!

I only tell people 1/3 of what im REALLY doin', just so they can HATE ONLY on that third...

not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it. :)

I used foam matting and various cloth material in between certain metal panels that needed it w/ and w/ out dynamatt. I used Cascade on my entire interior minus the headliner, but more to trap DB's in than quiet the car. The "rubbing" or "clacking" that generally causes trunk/hatch rattle is most effected by putting 1/4", 1/2" or 1" upholstry foam (avail at fabric stores) in between metal or plastic panels so it's not "hard material/plastic" against any other hard surface.

That has deadened my car the most.

Remember to get a nice chunk of it behind the license plate too and put all 4 screws if possible. Plate rattle is a killer.

Also-Just crank it up and go all the way around the vehicle lookin for "new" rattles to deaden. I found my last "phantom" rattle was coming from part of my exhaust and some pieces under the trunk area needed some "love" to shut the hell up.

Good luck w/ it and post up if that helps/not.

thanks, i was actually thinking about the expanding foam for the inside of the actual trunk lid (not the top, the inside portion where the keyhole is), would that be a wise choice? also the actual trunk latch keeps the trunk closed and never pops open, but, there is play (obviously) when the bass hits. what can be done to keep the trunk closed tighter? i already tried adjusting the latch. is there some thicker weather stripping or anything that can take care of this? i like the idea that the old school cadillacs have with that "self tightening/closing" latch, but that would take some good custom work.

I would look at useing a different rubber. and a little adjustment once in a while on the lid will help.

be careful on the foam don't apply it anywhere u don't want it too mess things up

take it out and put some foam under the cover (on top of the shelf) then reinstall your cover. then put as much hushmat, raodkill, (whatever u use) on the underside of the shelf on the inside of the trunk. just leave holes open for your bass to get into the cab.

EDIT: Yeah out like in the pic lol

hell I think you can get some 1/4" thick foam sheets for dirt cheap at home depot, kinda like the insulating sheets they use for a.c duct work...it even has adhesive on one side.
