The processor is twice as fast and 3G speeds are higher. With a theoretical of 7.2 mbps. I have a 1st gen iphone and can't wait to finally upgrade. I was always waiting for the 32gb and with tethering it will be awesome. Also the main new thing is the 3.0 os which will be available to all iphone users.
