My Wagon With Lots Of Digital Designs :)

Recommended Posts

Hello people of SMD.com

Love the site, it's a great place to visit, even though I rarely post. I like to read it regularly. I am 18 years old and I live in Australia and this is my daily driver.

Here is my car, she is a 1969 Chrysler Valiant Safari station wagon. This is a car built for Australia but is based very close on your Dodge Dart Coupes. Powering the old girl is a trusty 225 slant six and a column shift transmission.

So far the installation has been gradual as I keep changing my mind halfway through the installation.

The heart of my system is my JVC KD-SH1000 headunit, which is USB driven which means lots of easily updated, skip-free data. As you would expect with any headunit it has triple 5v preouts, 5 channel time alignment, MP3/WMA playback, motorised face and fancy animations for wank factor.

My speaker amp comprises of an Eclipse XA4000 4 channel. It delivers 350wrms to each of my front speakers. This amp is very tasteful looking and sounds excellent too, being class D means it doesn't draw a heap of current either.

My current front speakers are Kicker RS6, oldschool of course. These are currently on their way out and I will be upgrading in the near future. These are installed in custom fiberglass kick panels to achieve excellent SQ and so as to not damage the car's door trims.

Battery power is provided by a pair of Optima Yellowtops, a D34 up front and the largest, the D31 monster up the back (maybe a second one soon, heh heh heh :))

Authority comes from a Digital Designs 9915 dual 1 ohm. I haven't built an enclosure for this baby yet so I may be asking for some advice from you guys, I'm new to DD Audio but not Car Audio. My previous woofers were a pair of 06 series Kicker L7 15". I got pissed off with these and sold them.

To drive the subwoofer I have a Digital Designs Z1a on order which I believe makes 4kw or something which should be enough power for the time being. Perhaps a second Z1a will be in order before the year is out! :)

Thanks for taking the time out to check my install thread and hope to be chatting to you guys in the future! :)

Stay tuned for more updates as things progress.

PS: My PB for this car is 137.7dB on my TL from a single 10" Pioneer subwoofer off less than 1000w. Not bad for a huge washing machine car! :P

Yes it's strange but you can actually get class D amplifier which aren't just dedicated subwoofer amps.

Here's a link to the Eclipse webpage.

I do install all my gear and construct everything. My last system was a 146+ car on music, you may have seen the videos on youtube, as I said I'm no stranger to car audio. My current system looks like nothing but I'll post some pics of my box for the old L7s and maybe some other random pics in the next few minutes.

Cheers for your replies! :)

Here's my old enclosure for the Kicker L7s. I think it was about 9 cubic feet. For jokes I metered it and did 137dB @ 20hz. But as you know with car audio we are never happy so it exists no more!

The ports were held in by hi tensile bolts with insert threads, just like Meade's :D All the insides were coated with a generous layer of fibreglass resin and was then sanded smooth!

Here I am doing some wiring.

And finally my extremely bland kickpanels, I'll probably have to change them when I upgrade my frontstage anyway!

Cheers

  • 3 months later...

Bit of an update, Digital Designs Z1a has been in for a few months, and before that I was trialling a Rockford T40001BD :D Not a bad amp at all, this particular had a birth sheet of 4969wrms!

I now have two DD 9915s, I did 147.2dB @ 40hz with just one sub. The second one should be good. :)

Here's my box:

Still needs a tonne of work to get the most out of it, I'd really love that 150..

Upgraded my front end to Dynaudio Esotec 242 running fully active which means it also sounds good now :)
