MrSoundz Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 How many of you use active crossovers in your system? Instead of using the head units or amplifier's crossovers, you have external crossovers do the job for you. I am considering adding one on my system.
BeAlLsTaR13 Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 dont you mean passive? active is when you use amplifiers/HU's for crossovers, passive is when you use an external crossover that, or i dont get what your saying? BeAlLsTaR13 Posted November 24, 2009 Report Posted November 24, 2009 thought so, lol but yeah, im running passive crossovers, only because they came with my components and pheonix gold RSD6cs arent worth running active, id only run active with a very prestigious type of components, ones that are MEANT to be ran active, high ends like focals, rainbow, hybrid etc and so on.. thats what i think at least. Active simply means it is crossed over before amplification, passive is after. So an externam xover, that intercepts the RCAs signal before amplification is still active. Im actually looking into what xover to run to go active in my next setup woman..cant live with em...cant shoot em...guess were all fucked You might be a Redneck if you use your leftover gutters for a speaker box port... The Performer Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 I have used an active crossover in a buddies system (bass x-over), it was a VERY basic one at that. Had a few slope options to select from and boost options, but in the end it gave his subs a well needed tuning since his H/U did not have any x-over features what so ever. Depending on what you're going for, if you get a decent headunit they can do a damn good job at giving you MANY of fine tuning settings. For instance my alpine 9887 has a very nice built in X-over that is fully user tunable. I believe eclipse has an even more flexible one out now. CERTIFIED BITCHES!!! Stephen Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 i use a audiocontrol 4xs you can cook bacon shirtless if you're not a pussy...lol not hatin, but am i wrong here it looks as if the amp is not grounded its hooked directly to the battery. it that the way it should be. DC POWER

Actually you're PG's do need to be ran through an active crossover as well. All speakers kinda work the same, and if you know what frequencies are safe for them they will sound like they should. From the looks of it you are running them off of an amp, that's where you want to limit what those components are getting. Although they still have the passive crossover block, that is made to separate the frequencies and direct them to either the mid driver, or the tweeter. I'm pretty sure that specific set does not allow a HPF for the mid driver. So in that case you will be getting VERY low bass notes to your mid driver. Not a good thing. I'm looking at adding those exact components into my truck doors, they will be ran externally from an amp, however I will limit the HPF directly from the alpine. If you notice on the specifications of those components, the frequency range is suggested at 45hz and up. So giving that little 6.5" mid driver a note below 45hz would probably damage the driver over time. I'd set the HPF at about 70hz or even higher with a pretty long slope, but that's just me.
