CJ18 Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 This post is for those of you just like me who have purchased 1 or more High Output Alternators and have them installed by a local Alternator shop. Here is what happened to me. My local shop installed my new IRAGGI Alternators and did all of the wiring for them. When running the Power Wire from the Alternator to the battery they ran it through a fuse block first and then into the battery. Well one phone call to Iraggi and Dom tells me this is the wrong way for them to be hooked up. Correct Wiring is to run the Power Wire DIRECTLY from the alternator to the battery. DO NOT USE A FUSE!!! I just pulled the fuse out and it looks like someone shot it. Dont assume that your local shop knows how to hook up these alternators, they are trained and specialize in much smaller stock alternators. Last before you go and get all pissed off because your alternator isnt charging properly and get mad at whoever you bought it from make sure it is wired properly. This will save you alot of money on buying a new alternator and save you from making an ass of yourself on places like this by bad mouthing the Alternator Company. Thanks to IRAGGI for 2 beast Alternator and for helping me rewire what the pros screwed up!!!
thehoe92 Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 can't blame the shop.. some people for the Big III put a fuse between the positive going from the alt to the battery but really.. I have never heard of a fuse hurting anything, was the fuse big enough? Wouldnt be thehoe92 without teh purple
Tek Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 I always thought it was supposed to be done like that or else there could be a fire or whatever. Hmm.
micahmye Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 I respect Dom, but most people will put a fuse in between the alt and battery, so that if something gets shorted out or you over draw your alt you burn a $2 fuse rather than your $500+ HO alt, You may just need the right size fuse between the alt and the battery. IE: 300A alt=300A fuse. Correct me if I'm wrong. I just wired it like Dom said and it works perfect and I picked up .25db. I know that doesnt sound like much but it got me over 152.
audiofanaticz Posted January 26, 2010 Report Posted January 26, 2010 fuck fuses. x3... But a fuse dont hurt anything and practical to do upon installing on a daily driver. Not only that if the shop dont install fuses im sure there would be legal troubles if something happened to the car such as a fire, and a fire marshell or a claims adjuster noticing no fusing. If a person dont know how to run their own power wire (with all the usefull forums), me the installer would do everything possible to protect my ass, as well as the shops ass. After all theres a reason that the shop is doing the install work not the know it all kid (who didnt know). /rant Edit and PS: Steve Meade runs a separate fuse for each alternator.
