this is simple

bass knob = its just an eq boost like on your cd player centered at 45hz or a variable frequency u can choose (35-70hz lets say), not a good choice because u arent boostin every note nor when u turn it down are u quieting all notes because the boost has a slope on each side like a crossover point... this is called the q (for those of you with parametric eqs u should know this!) so even if u boost at 45hz there will still be boost at 40hz and 50hz for example

remote gain/level knob adjust the input senstitvity of the signal the amp recieves.... meaning it will alter all notes the amp plays... this is what u want because it is more precise/more predictable/more reliable

(sundown, aq, some dd, upper end hifonics)

So...is there a way to know which you have?

Because my el-cheapo Profile AP1000M has a bass knob that I guess I always assumed was a gain knob, but it could be boost I guess. The manual calls it a "bass level remote control."

If you popped open the amp you could use a digital multimeter to measure the gain circuit as you adjust it (not while its on or playing) to see which one it controls. Thats about it if the manu is crappy enough not to tell you exactly what its for.
