I have a 89 Chevy 1500 that I've been working on since I was 15. It has a 350 that I just got running but I want to build an engine for the experience so I can eventually build a badass motor for it. I know where I can get a block for dirt cheap but I don't know where to go after that. I know all the basic parts of an engine but no idea on how to put one together. I found a 350 blueprint book at the bookstore but I figured I would ask you guys if there was somewhere I can learn on line before I drop 50 bucks on a book.

I have built SEVERAL motors and if you are not going to get exotic I am going to be honest with you after machine shop cost, and parts its much cheaper to just buy a good turn key. I am building one right now and just for the machine work on the block and the rotating assembly I am in the hole about $2200 that does not include the other 4 to 5 thousand I will have to spend on heads,intake,carbs,etc...etc... I just figured I would let you know what you are getting into ...by the way all my cost are for building a 347 Stroker

its not super hard, i would say focus on internals, and heads, more than anything. forced induction is always a way to go :]

and for a cheap 350, check craigslist.

im taking out my passenger seat, battery is disconnected, going to unwire and take out the three amps, take out the 70+ lb box, then the platform so i can crimp 1 wire.

Almost as bad as those fegs that put those horns in their grills and roll down the street distorting the block....

are you having the machine shop line hone the block, deck it, bore it, and install everything? because $2200 is insanely high. My local machine shop charges $150-200 to clean up the cylinder walls, hot tank the block, and micropolish the crank. and I hope you mean $4-5k on the those 3 items is buying custom stuff.

as for off the shelf stuff, these heads are an amazing bang for the buck http://www.jegs.com/p/Brodix/Brodix-Top-End-Combo-Kits-For-SB-BB-Chevy/755737/10002/-1

that is half of your $4-5k price tag. where the hell do you spend another $2500 on the top half of that engine? A 383 rotating assembly is about $1000. add that to the price of that brodix head kit and you're at ~$3300. Now I think the rest of the parts to complete that engine will add up to $5000, but no where close to $5000 on just the top half.

I'm not talking shit or anything, I just don't want to have the guy read your post and get discouraged. I have also built several ENGINES . DO NOT everrrr get into building 4 cylinders. they are the biggest waste of money. I built one that made a little over 600whp, and with the same money i spent on that build, I could have built a small block chevy engine that would have made well over 1000hp

oh and btw.. a MOTOR is electric, not an internal combustion engine

I had the shop do every thing ...decking, main line, acid wash....but if you read that also includes a new rotating assembly. and yes everything will be custom reverse mount water pump, march1 billet serp kit, vic jr intake, afr heads, full hyd. roller, etc ...The works....and yes you are correct on the engine /motor definition. If you look above though I told him UNLESS you are going exotic. I can buy a good turn key OEM 350 cheaper than I can do a good rebuild .
