thorshammer
First place i would start is the headunit. More often than not that is the source of a nasty clipped signal. Things like Bassboost, custom eq settings, sla (source level adjustment) etc.. all will increase the signal but are there more for lower volume listening enhancement. Thus would only come into play to get the big boom feeling at low volume levels. As you turn your hu up these settings need to come down so that the amp doesnt see dirty signal and reproduce an ugly and sub killing clipped signal. As far as numbers it dont matter. I can put 4krms to ea of my lvl 5 drivers and dont have a problem burning coils because its a clean signal. I can take the same subs and put it on 1k clipped and whoa stinky happens lol

MikeyF
And THERE is your problem. You are clipping the signal. No reason to have the bass boost turned up, and just about everyone will agree with me. So, all in all, you ARE clipping the signal. MikeyF
Yup, both on the headunit, and at the amp. Are you also FOR SURE that your friend used the oscope right, and you didn't just turn the gains up where it sounds good? What is the LPF at as well?
