Straight Lines

Recommended Posts

chalk line FTW, I use a circular saw almost everyday @ work I can cut pretty straight without a guide, it takes alot of practice, when the cut has to be perfect, I will chalk line it and use a guide.

I just bought a adjustable Drywall T-sqaure, you can take the t part off for a 48" straight edge, as good as I think I can cut without a guide, this was a must have, so much easier to do. $21 plus tax @ Lowes.

Yea a chalk line is always nice-I've only used them in woodshop way back when and even then just to "prove I could" for the grade.

All you need to make a straight cut is a tape measurer, pencil/pen/sharpie and if possible a long straight edge to use as a marking guide.

ANYTIME I have to make a line, regardless if I'm using the table saw/jig/router etc I ALWAYS draw a line so I can SEE where I SHOULD be and correct it if I start to wander off track/line.

From the "un-touched" or "virgin" edge, OR any line you already KNOW is straight, measure to where you want your line and mark it.

Do this MANY MANY MANY times along the piece of wood until you have a set of dashes or a dashed line (should look like - - - - - - - - or maybe farther apart - - - - - -) and once you have a whole bunch of small lines that are all the same distance from the edge, you just connect the dashes and you should have one straight line.

It's the same eefect as a chalk line but chalk can rub off/blow off or be "messy" to some.

I "draw all-the-hell-over" what ever I'm workin on only cuz it helps me keep track of what I'm doin on the more complicated projects.

Investing in some decent tools wouldn't hurt either. Some times the right tool can make the job sooo much easier and look much more professional in the end.

ok well since noone mentiond it here i will....

get a 8 foot straight edege from homedepot/lowes, its a 2 pice deal real nice its in the tool section dont know the cost but its worth the money

but when you make your mark where you want the wood cut DONT forget that the guide will push the saw away from the cut mark AProx. 1.5 inches out or in depending on which side your cuting the line, so measure from the saw blade to the outside of the saw base and add that amount to your orignal measurement and make the wood the new line and mark the orignal line on the edege so you can see the blade is on the rite side of the line..

if you dont you will have one pice 1.5 short or 1.5 too long and thats a pain in the ass to deal with when you put the bottom and both sides on and go to put the top on and then notice o shit my one side isnt the same as the other now what lol

If I remember right, it costs $19.99 for that guide. Wish it came with clamps, but it is a real nice guide.

The guide is good but I have that same saw and it's not the best. It works ok but if you can step up to a better one. It has a hard time cutting through real wood like plywood and Birch.

not many cars can get me to pluggin my ears but this one.......damn. I mean the first minute is ok but that thing just really starts digging deeper and deeper in your earhole till you cant stand it no more. Seems like it does it with relative ease....16 12's on 8 amps.........gotta love it. :)
