I'll just shoot you a bunch here. Pick and choose which you think should be added.

How do I determine whether or not a coil is blown?

What is a "blown" woofer?

Can I blow a sub by underpowering it?

When do I need to start doing electrical upgrades?

(And one I'd actually like to know, though it isn't 100% CA related:)

How do I determine the proper range on my DMM?

EDIT: Neo, you are friggin awesome for this.

You may be offended by the above. Don't take it personally, I'm just abrasive.

When do I need to start doing electrical upgrades?

To go along with that, what electrical upgrades are available. Thats a big one that I never knew when I was new here. Also just electrical stuff in general. Like "Whats an VCM" and what size alternator for how many watts and that kind of stuff.

Oh and your amazing!!! :drinks: :drinks:

Thank you, good sir. I'll throw VCM in the definitions. I pretty much covered most of the other stuff I think. If any thing is unclear, let me know.

Well the reproduction is highly dependent on the box, but you can't say the response won't change. While the "loudness" does increase with cone area, the response of the entire driver does too. Different size subs have different electrical and mechanical compliance, different resonant frequencies, and different sensitivities, so putting them in a similar enclosure to the smaller sub WILL in fact yield a different sound.

I have already explained how higher SD will yield more air movement, but technically a general trend is that the FS of a certain model will go down as the size gets bigger. That means the "bigger" sub will play lower in the correct environment, but there is no reason to ever think that 10s or 12s won't stop your heart with subsonic frequencies.

I thought you wanted it in noob-speak, so it's not to complicated? :peepwall:

Thinking is the root of all problems...

Sd - Effective piston radiating area of driver, in square centimeters. "This is the actual surface area of the cone, normally given in square cm."

;) Nope.

...... I was reading through the definitions at the very top and noticed it wasn't there. Maybe I should just read everything before I open my big mouth next time :werd_msword:

True, but I'm hoping if people don't understand the answers, they will reference the definitions or the other info to get a better idea. Honestly, the number one problem I think is knowing what the words mean!

  • 4 weeks later...

lookin good man great info

how about how big to build an enclosure and why? I hear some people saying they got two 10s in a 9 foot enclosure and shit like that. also another thing that might be cool would be an explanation of different boxes and advantages/disadvantages

example: sealed-ported-bandpass and different order bandpass-t-line

also what about things like port area and anything else you could think of

Keep it up!

somebody sticky this PLZ!

i have been wondering what frequencies react best in what given airspace???...

(it has to do with 1/4 wave theory somewhat.)

this type of info will come in handy when building an extreme vehicle =] .
