Is it not turning over? Can you hear the relay when you turn the key? Maybe a bad starter solenoid

And you've replaced the spark plugs and wires? Checked the distributor cap?

Bad MAF sensor maybe? are there any leaks in the intake piping? That's the only thing I can really think of, otherwise search for a good subaru forum, you might be able to find a forum just for the impreza, those guys would probably know the exact problem. That's all I got really

Sorry, haven't done much work on boxer motors, but I say x2 on the subaru forums. You might have better luck there.

got it to start! but theres no power, i can floor it and its gutless, any ideas? btw there is a strange knocking noise, not rod knock, seems to be comeing from around the intake manifold.

You got timing issues. Thats why theres no no power, and the knock is probably the valves staying open and the pistons hitting them. Get the timing right or you'll be buying new heads on a car thats probably not worth it.

EDIT: There could be valve or piston damage already, too, causing power loss.

If its backfiring through the intake that could sound like a knock.

If there is Deisel fuel in the gas that will cause hard starts, poor running and lean backfires. I would get a fuel sample, and double check the spark plug wire order.

front of car.
