if linearity is so important everyone would be running LMS ultra's :peepwall:

MMMMMMMM LMS, I chose those if you can find them......

Probably one of the sexiest woofers ever made

lvl 5 > SMD

saw 1 lvl 5 do a 170+

I saw a top fuel car run 313mph...

Does that mean they all can do it?

Nope.

Key word here, OPINIONS... Since Im running DC level 5 18's, and NEVER ONCE bashed or said anything negative about the SMD sub, this is what the OP asked for, and wanted.

I'm by no means an expert in the field, nor do I portray to be one. This is a CAR AUDIO ENTHUSIASTS web site, not some fucking physics web site. Now, if Nick wants to explain it in layman's terms, by all means, explain away. Until he does, 99% of the people on here aren't going to know wtf he is saying... I understand some of it, but would love to know more...

If you can't understand things in terms of purple drink, Fanta, and Pickles...

I'm not sure what else to tell you. :)

It doesn't get any simpler then that.

op does have a budget though, so therefore lvl5s because if nick is saying the smd is this and that, but then look at the prices of course the more expensive one is going to be better right?

Did it ever dawn on you that no matter what woofer you put in there it would be within a few dB of any other one in that particular install?

Ah..acoustics..install the exact same with temperature, sun direction, elevation, atmospheric pressure, time of day, humidity, temperature shift of cabin under pressure at the 3 seconds of play time...all constant the only variable being the woofer itself...only difference being in the shift of Qts with the rise of the cabin pressure when the coil becomes in motion and you LOSE MOTOR FORCE BECAUSE THE COIL IS NOT IN A MAGNETIC FIELD (where supergauss comes in with a constant field force)

Anyhow...

Been there and done that one years ago with Mike Bartell's van...did a 179.6...arguing SPL numbers is like arguing time slips. If it isn't done back to back in the same day with the same vehicle and all conditions the same then it matters none.

Every woofer is going to act differently in every install. If SPL numbers were the end-all be-all to if a woofer is worth its salt or not, there would be no other companies and the 99z would be the only woofer on the market care of alan dante doing a 8O and some change with 1 of them in his car. Keyword, his car. His installed dialed in PERFECTLY for that one frequency that it plays.

But it isn't, and the 99z definitely is not the only woofer on the market...and you don't ride around playing 67Hz at 170dB in your ford escort. You listen to music...not midbass on crack with a 22dB difference in the drivers side to the passenger side corner loaded vehicle. You poke your head over the console and it will rip your eyeballs out of their sockets.
