Avira did on a complete scan, and some paid one he uses did on live mode. Microsoft wasn't free at this time. Avast free is still decent... but AVG is still top of the list. So what kind of "simple virus type file" did your friend write? Grab the code and I'll take a look at it. Agreed. I use Microsoft Security Essentials and recommend it to everybody in real life that asks what they should get.
