I like going by the XMAX. I have 14^2 of flared aero port per cube for my 12 and it loves it. Used the crappy rule of 7-9 per cube for aeros and it lost a shitload of sound and had so much damn port noise I didn't want to listen to it. This will get you a ballpark answer

But you can find the actual equations on diysubwoofers.org

I am wanting to properly vent a Alpine Type R1242D, and the data sheet gives you all the info you need for create it. Are the specs provided any good, if I am trying to vent it for both SQ and mid SPL? Have I selected a crappy sub to do perform this task?

Larger ports are generally louder but more peaky, smaller ports are able to play a larger bandwidth.

If you have 14 cuft I would suggest no less than 170 sqin of port.

i was thinking leave the 12 sitting in the box in the hole and duck tape from the bottom of the sub to the bottom of the baffle so the sub doesnt free air. would that work?

I usually use 14-20sqinches for my rule... Sometimes more than 20 is applicable.

Very nice responds from everybody, yes i´ve tried the whole xmax formulas and let me tell you, i prefer going by trial and error, just get a big ass port and start shrinking it until you find the sweet spot, my DD 2512´s have a big xmax wich results on a big port?? well, that´s according to formulas, but in the real live i got something way different, of course, every system and car it´s different, but hey, i ended up with 16 SQ per cubic feet, while my 1510´s sounded better with 18 SQ per cubic feet and a smaller xmax haha, or better yet, when i tried a single 3518 (same xmax than the 2500 series) i ended up with 20 SQ per cubic feet ON AEROPORTS!!!

Anyways, that´s why we love car audio :)
