Moley Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Hey all. I was playing my tunes at night with the car on and the lights dim quite a bit.( I know I should remedy that ) I was parked btw. Having said that I turn off my car cause it was wasting gas and I noticed my lights didn't dim near as much. The volume was the same on the stereo. I am curious as to why that is. Anyone know?

bumonskateboard6 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Chances are you're dropping to the 12's or high 11v range..which is where your battery is going to rest so it's not going to be dropping it from 14-12 so you don't notice the dim as much. My alt runs at 15.1 so dropping to 14 is a slight dim for me... I thought there would be less dimming with the car running as there is more juice but there is also more of a voltage drop when running an amp that draws more than what the alternator can produce. Gotcha and thanks for the info. Also I was thinking of getting another battery to help with this issue of dimming but won't it still dim as it will still drop from 14 to 12. I mean if the alt is 14.4 volts and a battery is 12 then there will always be a voltage drop no matter how many batteries you have. Am on the right track here?

No, the current drawn by your amp is FIRST provided by your alternator, when the current exceeds the rating of your alt, it falls back on the battery to back it up, hence the voltage drop. Ok awesome. I appreciate the responses/answers. It really helps me to understand the dynamics of what's going on. So the more current I have (car on) the less of a voltage drop I will have. Is that right?
