Are you supposed to put a fuse between the alt and the battery. All the demos of the big 3 that I have seen never include a fuse there.

Yeah you will probably be hassled. The border patrol doesn't like letting minors in without their legal guardians. 0 gauge or 1/0. I think 1/0 would be safer though. Tsunami and Rockford Fosgate have good product but they are also pretty expensive. Most 1/0 is pretty expensive though.
