He rates the D3100s at 2500wrms for comps and 5000wrms for daily systems. I prefer using math though. What alt(s) do you have? And I don't get it... why's the difference between comps and daily... I slam my system FULL tilt daily for song after song so it'll be full tilt for im talkig 20-45mins at a time... For comps- youre playing a system on a single tone for about a 30 second time period (sometimes straight, without any breaks). For daily systems- The subs arent always playing during a song. When they are playing, the impedance is almost always changing. At some frequencies, i bet a true 5000watt amp only outputs 500watts rms.

I believe half the distance is a "rule of thumb." I think I remember hearing that it depends on how big the kerf is (like you said).
