Take the laptop apart and check for dust, could be clogging your circulation when you need it most. Also, have you done any upgrades on the laptop? If so its a power issue. Example: was fixing a desktop with a 250 watt psu, plugged in a seagate external HDD and it fried the PSU LOL Edit: I know laptops do run hot, but 140 degrees when you're not doing anything is really hot bro... I'd be lucky if my desktop goes over 100 under load...air cooled. Like I said before, could be just needing new thermal material on the cpu, or dust clogging the fan. does sound like the cpu is shutting off under load

Unless you're thinning out the whole wire, I guess it wouldn't make a difference because you still have the same amount of current allowed to go across the wire.

Volume does not = power being produced. Amp always makes the same amount of power. As said by others, amps are stupid, they don't know what to do so they just keep making a set amount of power depending on voltage, impedance, and gains. The amp doesn't say "OH HAI HE'S TURNING THE VOLUME DOWN, I'LL BE SURE TO CREATE LESS POWER"... Edit: If you meant "....time you turn the GAIN down..", then you are correct. If not, read the above. Dirty power? You mean signal? No such thing as "dirty" power..

Always disconnect your battery ground before connecting any electronics. Also, ground off first and on last. You said you put the ground on first AND you had power going across the line? There's your problem....That's how i fried the channels on my amp in the past, cost me 65$ to get it fixed.
