doughboi916
ok so i have a 1200 rms amp, i only have 4ga running to it and dont feel like buying 0ga so can i double the 4ga? the battery is already in the back. Also if i build a ported box with tube ports can i have the ports in the back of the box and the sub in the front? some one told me its a bad idea cause the air wont circulate in the box?? it will just go through the ports?? LSN2meBoom916
Not sure what ur askin here bro. Might need to clarify some of it. "Double the 4ga"...going to the one 1200rms amp? or add a 4ga for another amp? or you saying add another amp to the existing 4ga? Very unclear here. Also, port should either be same side as subs or port back and subs 90 degress off as in sub up port back or sub back port up. This is to avoid cancellation. dmanson
i understand what you're saying. i'd rather double up the 4ga versus only using one run of it .......... sort of sucks to have multiple runs of a smaller wire when you can just get one big wire but do what you have to do. Guest MegaloManiac
a single run of 4awg is fine for 1200watts no need to double it. however if you are thinking two 4 awg = one 1/0 awg youd be wrong. I belive 3 runs of 4 = 1 run of 1/

I belive 3 runs of 4 = 1 run of 1/0 Almost. 2-4ga cables = 1-2ga wire 2-2ga wires = 1-1ga 2-1ga wires = 1-0ga if it's "really" what it says it is, in any case... Some cable will be over/under marked. If you had 3 overkill 4ga that would be close to = 1/0ga. In either case, Megalo is correct on the NOT needing more cable, 1200rms is fine off 4ga. what 1200watt amp says it "requires" 1/0ga is my Q? If you want to and have the cable u'd be fine doubleing the cable up and running another one but actually GETTING IT INTO THE AMP...cleanly might be an issue. Maybe consider a reducer. audiofanaticz
Almost.2-4ga cables = 1-2ga wire 2-2ga wires = 1-1ga 2-1ga wires = 1-0ga if it's "really" what it says it is, in any case... Some cable will be over/under marked. If you had 3 overkill 4ga that would be close to = 1/0ga. I think thats correct from what I always heard. like wiring two 4 ohm coils parallel making it 2 ohms, same type of deal for wire. But you also go by strand count. Theres a lot of companies that claim their wire to be 1/0 gauge and after looking at the strand count of the cheap wire, then compairing the cheap 1/0 gauge strand count to companies like stinger or rockford, you will notice that this cheap 1/0 gauge wire has the same strand count as a quality companies 4 gauge. The cheaper companys just put a bigger rubber insulator around the wire to try and fool you  If you got the extra 25 feet of 4gauge, and you dont want to spend money for 1/0 you might as well run it. It will result in less resistence giving you better electrical flow which is always a plus. So you wont be hurting your stereo or electrical system none, you will be making it more stable I think someplace on the smd site there is a wiring guide stickied. I think its in the wiring forum. But it will give you a general rule of thumb for wiring sizes broke down into how many watts your running, and the length of the cable you will be needing, which results in what size wire you need. Actuly it was a quick find. http://www.stevemeadedesigns.com/board/ind...?showtopic=1005 4 gauge: ~140 amperes Class D (~70% efficiency) - <1400 watts Class A/B (~50% efficiency) - <1000 watts The average lenth of a power wire is around 18 feet. But say you need 30 feet, then id sugust stepping up to 2 gauge since the extra length in wire will raise resistance which means your amp is not getting the current it needs as fast as it needs it. Ray
At least somebody nailed the length part of the equation.. think about a 10amp draw from 1000ft away.. shit it would need 1/0 for a 12v run. Back to my hole. p.s. @ 18ft you are close to needing to run the other wire, if you have it run it to a d-block then go into the amp. It wont hurt thats for sure. ChevyBoy
i have come kompressed knukonceptz 1/0, and its just 2 4 gauge wires side by side, and together its almost as big as their 1/0 (2/0).
