birch vs mdf

Recommended Posts

Depends on your budget and if you have any weight issues with your vehicle. Birch is going o be the more expensive but lighter option, About $45-$50 per sheet and about 60lbs and MDF will be your cheaper but heavier option, $25-$30 per sheet and about 90lbs. As for which is better that is pretty much just a matter of preference if nothing I said above applies to you.

From what I'm given to understand, its a toss up. Birch is ligher, has less sawdust, and (IMO) looks better.

MDF is cheap. And works perfectly fine.

Don't know how they compare when you work with them except for the fact that MDF has a tendency to split if you don't predrill.

If I had to speculate, I'd think birch was a little healthier since you don't inhale crap tons of glues. But I have no fact to back that up. And I doubt you'd want to snort either one.

You may be offended by the above. Don't take it personally, I'm just abrasive.

here we go again, lol, comes down tp budget and preference really. most prefer mdf due to its cheaper and performs well, but birch gains about 30% in weight savings and usually about 40% more expensive.

Around here birch is only about $10 more than MDF per 4x8' sheet. If you're bad at making clean cuts though it can fall apart. I prefer birch as I am in a small car, and the more weight I can save, the better. And if I remember correctly I think birch is actually stronger than MDF as well.

I also heard that birch is stiffer than MDF which is better but how much better is unknown. It's not like your decidng between mdf and particle board. The next box I build I think I will spend the little xtra for the birch just to try it.
