You cannot hear distortion until it gets to a high level. An oscope or the smd DD-1 will find distortion way before your ears do. Not even the DMM trick works as well as the scope or dd-1 will. Just keep it at the subs rated power and dont go any further until you learn or do some reading on here about how to set everything up and know the tricks to it all. There is no way to set you amp to put out a certain amount of power. The power it puts out will change on every frequency. This question should never be asked for a daily driver setup.
