multiple round ports

Recommended Posts

ok so i am about to build an enclosure for 4 8's in roughly 3 cubes (before speaker and port displacemennt). when i figure out the ports i calculate for three 4" ports now my calculator tells me i need 23.xx inches of port. is this each port of total on all three? im figuring its each. just like when i add sq.inch to a vented box it lengthes the entire vent. i just want to be sure because this will greatly impact my airspace calculations. so much i may only run 2 instead of 3 ports. making my port area about 27 sq.in. which is a little undersized for 3 cubes.

You need 23" long each port, why don´t you go with a single 7" PVC or carboard port?? takes less internal space from your box and it should get you louder than multiple smaller ports, best of all, you can find it for free!!! Go to a large format printing company and ask them to give you the tubes where the banner rolls come in ;)

Fecupe, why doesn't the OP go with 7" PVC ??? ....uhhh.... maybe because their is no such thing ?

It's hard enough to buy 6" PVC or other pipeing, and you won't find it at your local hardware store... maybe with the exception of 6" riser pipe (which is what I used in my latest box). Now cardboard ? You mean like "sono-tube" ? You might be able to order that in 8".... But you would probably have to buy at least a 14ft section of it. It would probably work fine though. Just hit it with some fiberglass resin, sand, and paint.

BTW, even though I used three 6" ports, in retrospect, I now agree that one larger, single port would have probably been better, and would have given me an extra DB or two.

That said, the next time around, my enclosure will be vented, rather than ported.

Didn´t know that lol, anyways, he can use sonotubes or the ones i said before, since they are free i guess it´s his best option, i´ve used them before with great success, even without glassing it or anything

Really ? That's news to me. Will keep that in mind, but....

I wouldn't say that "I'll never" use round ports again. They are easy, and they work fine...

But the problem I have had with every box I've ever built in the past, is that my design will call for 'X' sq in of port.... and a 6" diam port is not enough, and 2 6" is too much.... or, an 8" port is not quite enough, and 12" is too much.

Whereas, with a vent / slot, if the design calls for 'X' sq in of port, you can build it to have 'X' sq in of port > exactly.

Vented next time around..

You can also get 8" and 12" form tubes from lowes and home depot for under $10 and they come in 48" lengths if that helps

FYI: the word you are looking for is SLOTTED, not vented. A ported box, even with round tubes..... is still a vented box.

Sonotube they come big as hell and if you go to my new favorite store (meeks) they can custom order some pretty big ass sizes. Just resin the whole inside after its cut to your length needed then resin and mat the back side sanding in-between layers. They seem strong but if you didn't do any of that the pressure inside the box would destroy its semi thick cardboard body quick. Then look at the how to ray did in audio innovations section about getting a nice flare on the end and your set my friend

This is the site i use for round ports. You tell it what size and how many, and it tells you the length each one needs to be. Soon i will be starting a build for my 4 8"s too. :yahoo:
