SPL box tuning?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering at what hz is a box considered a SPL box? I'm asking this because there's a comp coming up in my area and it's gonna be my first comp ever. So I don't know one thing about it. So I was thinking maybe the tuning on a SPL box is a little bit higher than a daly driver box? If there is will the "SPL" box increase my score or will it stay the same as my daily driver box? With my daily driver box I scored a 136.2 iirc. But I don't have access to a term lab to just keep testing with different kind of boxes to tell wether it will help or not.

My daily box is tuned to 34 hz.

Thanks in advance!

SPL boxes peak output are frequently in the 40s region, enclosures are usually tighter the subwoofers used are usually high Fs. Just to give you an idea.

actually they are meant to peak at the resonant frequency of the vehicle. That way your enclosure peak and cabin peak are working together. it doesnt necessarily mean its in the 40s. CRXs peak in the 50s. tahoes and hte like peak in the 30s. Woofers dont need to have a higher FS to be used in spl applications. They just need to handle an absurd amount of power for a few seconds. Thats why you usually see the big 4inch coiled woofers. That does lend itself to have a higher fs in most cases but not always.

So should I try and build a box at 40 hz? Or should I just use my daily box?

I have a Chevy s10 extra cab and DC level 4 12' running off a DC 1.2k if that helps anything

When is the comp? Your going to need a meter (TL) to build a proper spl box or your just going to guesstimate. We can give you advice and designs to help you out. But we need the specs of your box and preferably pics. and need to know what your metering at now and where your peaking at.

OK here's what I did, I took a single 12 in a sealed box and ran a sweep, term lab said my res freq was 49 hz, so I built the box with 16.15 in^2 of port per ft^3 of net volume for an (18") and tuned to 46, and it worked out good my peak is 49hz, I would try and track down someone with a TL and start there, spl boxes are normally fairly small (around mins for sub spec) lots of port, lots of power. :D

Where can you find out the resonant frequency for a particular vehicle? Would be helpful to know where your "sweet spot" is...

It's on the 21st. But I probably won't have any access to a TL anytime soon. Im metering at 136.2 sealed and 141.0 with the windows down. I'm not sure what freq I was at though. I didn't ask what it was. I just took a picture if the score.

I also don't have a lot of space for the box because i have my second battery next to the box. If you need anymore information or pics just lmk what you want pics of and I'll try and post it up later on tonight or in the afternoon.
